What Documents Do I Need?
This guide follows ICBC’s selling rules. Rules can change, so check ICBC’s page if anything looks different.
| Document | What it’s for |
|---|---|
| Vehicle registration (APV250) | Proves you’re the registered owner; the registration portion is signed and handed over |
| Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T) | Records the sale; all four pages are completed with original signatures after you’re paid |
| Your licence plates | Removed from the car before it’s towed; they stay with you, not the car |
Keep a copy of the completed Transfer/Tax Form for your records.
Who Has to Sign?
The registered owner. If the car is in your name, you sign. If it’s in someone else’s name, such as a parent, partner or former business, that person needs to sign, or you need to talk to an Autoplan broker about transferring it first. ICBC says that if you aren’t the registered owner, an Autoplan broker is the place to start.

What Happens to My Licence Plates?
Take them off before the car leaves. ICBC says plates remain its property: keep them to put on another vehicle, or return them if you no longer need them. You may be able to move them to a new vehicle within 10 days if certain conditions are met; ICBC lists the conditions on its selling page.
What Do I Tell My Autoplan Broker?
That the vehicle has been sold. Your broker will end the coverage on it or move it to another vehicle. It’s worth doing the same day so you’re not paying for a car you no longer own.
What If the Owner Has Passed Away?
The car can still be sold, but it goes through the estate. ICBC’s estate transfer page says to:
- Review ICBC’s Checklist for Estate Transfers to see whether you can start the transfer.
- Contact an Autoplan broker.
- Bring originals or certified copies of the documents on the checklist, a Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T) with all four pages signed in original ink, and the current registration.
Call us before booking the pickup and we’ll make sure the timing works around the estate paperwork.
What If I’ve Lost My Registration?
You need it to complete the sale, so sort it out before booking a pickup. Talk to an Autoplan broker about getting a replacement, then call us once you have it.

Paperwork Questions
Can I scrap a car without the registration?
Not as a straight sale. In BC the registered owner signs the registration and the Transfer/Tax Form, so the paperwork has to be in order first. If your registration is lost or the car isn’t in your name, talk to an Autoplan broker, then call Tilbury Machinery & Vehicle Salvage in Delta and we’ll book the pickup once you’re ready.
Do I fill out the Transfer/Tax Form before or after I’m paid?
After. ICBC says to complete the Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T) once you’ve been paid. When Tilbury Machinery & Vehicle Salvage picks up a car in Delta, we pay you first and then complete all four pages of the form with you, so you keep a signed copy for your records.
Should I leave the plates on the car?
No. Remove your licence plates before the car is towed. ICBC says plates remain its property, so you either keep them for another vehicle or return them if you don’t need them. Tilbury Machinery & Vehicle Salvage reminds every seller in Delta to take their plates before we load the car.
Can I sell a car that belonged to someone who passed away?
Yes, through the estate. ICBC asks you to review its Checklist for Estate Transfers and contact an Autoplan broker with the listed documents, a signed Transfer/Tax Form and the current registration. Call Tilbury Machinery & Vehicle Salvage before booking a Delta pickup and we’ll work around that timing.
